Click on the title of this post to read an article about how much more college grads earn than those with just a high school diploma. Discuss the value of your college education as you prepare for your second semester in school. Please respond by noon, Wednesday, Nov. 18.
As far as monetary value from a degree goes, I guess it depends on what you go into. For instance, some people go to college for drama, because they want to become an actor/actress. I can't think of any offhand, but I know there are several famous actors who have graduated with degrees in drama, and are now doing what they want, and making good money. On the other hand, there are several, perhaps even more succesful actors who have only a high school diploma and are making good money and doing what they want. So in casese like this, I wonder if it's really worth it to go to college for something like this. I guess, a job in show business, or certain other industries like fashion, and some art. Sometimes all it takes is the propper talent to get where you need. For other jobs though, maybe more business related, I think people would probably be better off getting a degree in something. Sometimes people can work their way up in a business if they stay with it long enough. Wouldn't it be nicer to just be able to finish school and start off at a nice posistion though, than to work 10 years to get there? But even if the money isn't millions more than just having a high school diploma, there are many other good things that can be gotten from it. Like with the economy and job market the way it is, someone with a college degree would probably have a better chance at getting a job than someone without one. And then, like the article said, the benefits. And finally, people would probably be happier with a job that they like doing, because they went to college to pursue their interests, than a job they have to have to make ends meet.
Like Brit said, this all factors in on what you're going into. For example, an everyday cube worker will earn the same amount of cash everyday unless they're given a raise. This is called a fixed rate. On the other hand, there are jobs that are offer an adjustable rate, or even non-fixed rates. As an artist myself, my job would entail me getting hired by different people to paint them a pretty picture. Thing is that each job I get pays differently depending on certain variables such as effort and time. As for employment goes, fixed-rate, adjustable-rate, and non-fixed rate jobs come into play again. Fixed-rate jobs are unfortunately unpredictable, no matter what the degree. My own cousin graduated from Harvard a year ago and has had no luck finding himself a job. Adjustable-rate and Non-fixed rate jobs are usually the better choice to go, if the market for your career is good. Again using art as an example, Graphic Design is a job that will NEVER be in short supply. Not only can your pay be non-fixed, but you never have to worry much about not having a job, as long as you know how to promote yourself. To be honest, I've never quite payed attention to these studies about degree's, for I find the job world unpredictable. There are also always many variables as to why you can/can't get a job. So in short, don't listen to this mumbo jumbo report. Just get through school so you have the knowledge when you get your job.
I honestly think that a college degree is extremely important. I think there is a lot of competition out there, and having only a high school degree is not enough to divide the talented and hard working students from the other ones. Even with that said, many students graduate from high school knowing nothing about what they want to be or where they want to work, so I think college helps them find out who they really are and the dreams they want to pursue. Not only that, some students are just careless and oblivious during high school, but then they mature during college and become important people. I think it was Einstein who was like that, no one discovered him until after high school. Now talking about the famous actors that Britt mentioned, I think even they should consider having a college degree to rely on if something went wrong with their career. Because you never know what destiny has for you. You could be a famous actor one day then all of a sudden you stop working or something and without a degree to hold u back up you you fall straight on your head. You should always have a plan B. On the other hand, I think it is up to you to find a well paying job, you can't expect to get a job by just sitting at home and doing nothing even if you had the best degree in the country. What I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't take it for granted, having a college degree might not always get you a good job, but most of the time it does.
I believe that a college education is by one of the most valuable items today. I do beleive that getting a college graid education will better prepare you and lead to more money, and opportunity. I also agree with what Britt said. In some professions it would not even matter, or matter little. It all comes down to what you want to do and the location of where it is. The location is also a big factor. If you have a business degree and you live in a remote area, that is not very useful. If the degree is in commercial landscaping and your in a huge city full of skyscrapers, what good will that do you. Over all, I believe the better the degree, the better you are in the future.(especially with our economy)
College education is pretty important when it comes to finding a job but i also think that if you have a college degree you should be making more money then we are. You spend a lot of money to get the best education possible and whatever you go into should pay good money and get you by.
I think a college education is so important, especially with the economy and how it is today finding jobs is incredibly hard. With a college education it could make finding a job that much easier. I also really think college helps you grow up and mature, you are pretty much forced to think about what you want to do with the rest of your life, if you don't know already. It's hard to survive in this economy with out a job and I feel a college degree will put you on a path to a brighter future.
I think that a college education is beneficial for me in many ways. From a financial standpoint, as the article said, having a college education, though it may only slightly increase my salary, can provide me with more benefits and a greater chance to keep my job. Actually, it can really increase my salary by allowing me to pursue higher degrees. I also think that a college education is good for me because I am not yet prepared to begin my career and with college training, even if financially it may not be totally worth it, I would feel better because I would have under gone a few more years of preparation and training before embarking on my career journey. So, for me I think getting a college education is the best option.
I think the smartest thing for a high school graduate to do is attend college. Even if you are not sure what you want to do, going to college is better than not going at all. With a college degree it is much more easy to get a job than with just a high school diploma. Everyone has their dream job, and it usually needs some type of college degree. In order to have the job you love, I think it is very necessary to have that college degree behind you.
I think that this is absolutely a ludicrous debate. Of course a college degree or some means of higher learning is worth it. Sure the numbers aren't as staggering as whit is commonly believed, however that does not take away from this being essential in modern dday America. This is most evident here, in Motor City where most of the iindustrial jobs have been lost leaving Detroit with one of if not the largest unemployment rates in the nation of high unemployment rates. Even if the adverage person only makes a few thousand more than a person who doesn't have a college degree this is still thousands of dollars which will accumulate. Another truth in the job market is that there is a direct correlation to amount of time spent in school with payscale the more school you attend the more money you make it's as easy as that. College is also soo much more than a degree these days. College is where a young adult makes the pilgrimage between childood and adulthood. It is a time where people can assess who they are and who they want to be and have some fun along the way.
I think that a college education is extremely beneficial. Having a college education can increase my salary and also increase the value of my future. Being prepared for your future is more likely to make you successful. The extra years of training and preparation will help prepare. The best option is getting a college education and pursuing higher degrees.
I think that I need to make the most out of my college experience and try to diversify my degree so tat if I do not get a job with graphic design I will hopefully be able to find one with my back up degree. or hopefully try to put myself ahead of the crowd with a more advanced resume. I want to make myself stand out as much as possible on my resume.changing my course of study will help do this. Craig Hejka
I believe that a college degree is valuable because although sometimes you get better jobs later in life because you have gained experience, you need this degree as a starting point to get hired. It can also motivate you to continue your education and go on to get a masters or another professional degree so that, according to this article, you generally have the opportunity to make more money. So although we have to put a lot of hard work into earning that piece of paper they hand you at graduation, it will be worth it.
I would have to agree with britt that it just depends with what a person gets his/her degree in. It even states that if you were to get a MBA degree that you could earn 100,000 a year. But with so many people going to college now, I dont think that its going to be such a big deal for jobs now because its a norm. What I mean by that is that if everyone goes to college, than no one is going to stand out. If no one stands out for a job interview, its pretty much random who they will pick. Thats why I believe its important to get as much schooling as you can.
