DRIWR service

Now that you've completed your service project at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, what do you think? Did you make a meaningful contribution? Would you like to have done more? If so, what? Please respond by Wednesday, Nov. 4.

I think that the work we did at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge was good but could have been better. We saved the people who work for the Refuge some work by planting the shrubs for them. It also gave the Refuge an opportunity to publicize their work and to get outsiders involved and interested in it. The people who worked there did a wonderful job of making sure we were told why our project was needed and what good effects it would have on the Refuge and all the migratory birds that stop there. I did not personally feel that I had made a very meaningful contribution, however. I think this is because this type of service does not interest me very much or seem very important to me. Other types of volunteering give me much more satisfaction and a sense of meaningfulness. I did expect to do more work at the Refuge and so would not have had a problem with planting more bushes while we were there. Other than this, I do not have any suggestions for anything more we should have done.

I think the volunteer work we did at the wildlife refuge is going to make a difference. I do not think that planting the shrubs was enough and the workers do need more help than that. It is a very large area and they do not have enough volunteers to clean the refuge. I did not exactly like this type of volunteering because I am not an outdoors person, but I did feel good about myself at the end of the project because I know I contributed a little helping the refuge. I think I felt better raising money for the refuge rather than planting the trees because I am not so sure how much difference the shrubs are going to make.

The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge needed much more help than what we gave it. I think we did a good thing with helping raise money and planting shrubs but I don’t think we did enough. They had so much land and we were willing to help; I think they should have had us do more planting.

I personally think that the project at the Detroit International Wildlife Refuge was hopefully a good start to a potentially very good project. I'm not so sure however if that was the best way to utilize the manpower which our group had. We drove over an hour round trip planted shrubs for fifteen minutes and then left. My personal thought was that I would've taken more time to work and be willing to see more things that we as a class were actually associated with the project. I think that the workers did have a pretty good handle on what needed to be done there though and if our jobs were done than we atleast hopefully made a worthwhile contribution.I hope taht the area can go back to its original state and be a good habitat for the migratory birds as they pass. I hope that the money which we raised will be able to help with the project.

I do agree that we completed a good deed for the day, but we could have done so much more. My expectation of what needed to be done was not satisfied by what was completed. It would have been better if we did more than just plant a few shrubs each. I just wished we did more in general. We did make a change, though small, we did make an impression on the loads of work that needed to be done. This was also an educational experience and I did benefit from this trip.

I was dreading the service project all week. I thought we were going to be doing non-stop work for 3-4 hours. It turns out that we only planted a small amount for plants. This was a relief but then again a let down, while I really wasn't up to doing all the work I knew they needed the help. Looking back on it I think we could have done 10x more work than the group did. overall I'm happy with what we did i just wish we could have done more.

what we did at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge was a good start, I think we could have done so much more though. Obviously planting those plants helped out the refuge but we could still do so much more. I think it is very important to get out and volunteer as much as you can because especially at this time there is no such thing as too much volunteer work. the people who worked at the refuge gave really good direction and made us all feel like we really did something special which made me feel good about myself. I'm really happy to be a part of what we did and It made me want to get more involved with things like that!

It was lots of fun, I think more than anything because we did it as a class and had fun together. I do feel happy about doing it because I think it made a difference. I'm not really sure what's going to happen with it, but the ladies there seemed really pleased, so I'm glad I was able to make them happy. I don't think it's something I would choose to do on my own, mainly because I'm just not a nature person. I'm really all about animals though, so I hope it will be able to help them a lot. It concerns me that land is always being used for development and animals have fewer and fewer places to live. Although I only planted something like 6 bushes, which isn't a lot, when I looked around and saw everyone's work I realized that we had done something big. So, like I said, it's probably not something I would choose to do again, but I do have to say that I'm glad I did it and had the experience.

The service learning project was actually interesting. I believe that learning isn’t only about reading books or sitting in a classroom, we can learn a lot by actually going out and helping. Going to the International Wildlife Refuge proves that. Learning how to plant shrubs was more interesting than I thought. I think the fact that we were all working as a class added some excitement and joy to the whole thing. I’d have to agree with all my classmates, we could have done so much more, maybe not necessarily planting but maybe building things or watering the plants… It’s a colossal project and I’m sure they could have needed our help with other things. At the end of the day, I was happy with what I accomplished, it wasn’t much but it’s better than nothing. If I had to choose between helping an environmental organization or a people-related organization I would probably had chosen the people-related one. Helping people brings me more joy and satisfaction, because I can see the impact that I did on their faces, however I don’t really sense that when working with plants.

I was dreading this day for weeks. The thought of going out very early in the morning and working in the mud with bugs was absolutely appalling to me. I enjoy volunteering, but I like it to be clean and indoors generally. I was somewhat pleasantly surprised though, when it wasn't as bad as some professors made it sound! ;) I'm still not sure what planting 40-ish bushes will do for anything but it was fun and I'm glad we went.

I liked the fact that I was helping the environment and making a difference, but I honestly think that that service learning was a big joke and a big waste of time. I think that we didn't work hard enough when we were there and that I didn't retain the knowledge that was presented to me about it when we only briefly talked about it during class sessions. I think that what we did on paper looks good, but I feel like the work we actually did could be summed up as plants a bush or two and eating cookies and drinking cider for 2 hours.

Personally, I believe I didn't make a truly landmark change. I planted a few flowers and that's it. Gimme some grass seed, and 10 acres of land and I'll show you some change.

I should note that I don't feel that the work there was all for nothing, but it was a minuscule addition. I think we should have been planting shrubs as a final polish, not so far into the beginning.
